The sample mean directly serves as the maximum likelihood point estimate of the population mean μ.
Calculate the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the mean.
Scale the standard error by the two-tailed 95% normal critical z-value.
We are 95% confident that the true population mean tensile strength falls within this interval.
The sample data indicates an average component tensile strength of 100 MPa, with high statistical confidence that the true population average lies between 95.1 and 104.9 MPa.
| Target Parameter | Point Estimator | Formula | Unbiased? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Population Mean (μ) | Sample Mean (x̄) | ∑xᵢ / n | Yes (E[x̄] = μ) |
| Population Proportion (p) | Sample Proportion (p̂) | x / n | Yes (E[p̂] = p) |
| Population Variance (σ²) | Sample Variance (s²) | ∑(xᵢ - x̄)² / (n - 1) | Yes (with Bessel correction) |
| Mean Difference (μ₁ - μ₂) | Difference in Means | x̄₁ - x̄₂ | Yes |

A point estimate is a single numerical value computed from sample data to estimate a population parameter (e.g., sample mean x̄ = 50). An interval estimate (confidence interval) provides a range of plausible values that is likely to contain the parameter with a specified degree of confidence.
Dividing by n systematically underestimates the population variance because deviations are measured from the sample mean rather than the true population mean. Dividing by n - 1 corrects for this degree of freedom loss, yielding an unbiased estimator.
