P(A ∪ B ∪ C) = P(A) + P(B) + P(C) - P(A∩B) - P(A∩C) - P(B∩C) + P(A∩B∩C)P(A ∪ B ∪ C)P(A), P(B), P(C)P(A∩B), P(A∩C), P(B∩C)P(A∩B∩C)“Calculate the probability that at least one of three independent server components fails during peak load, with failure rates P(A)=0.40, P(B)=0.35, P(C)=0.25.”
Multiply individual probabilities due to statistical independence.
Probability of all three events occurring simultaneously.
Sum individual probabilities, subtract 2-way intersections to avoid double-counting, and add back the 3-way intersection.
There is a 70.75% probability that at least one server component fails, and a 29.25% probability that all three operate without error.
| Input Scale | Standard Output Range | Variance Band | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Baseline | 0.00 – 25.00 | ±1.5% | Optimal for conservative estimations |
| Median / Standard | 25.00 – 100.00 | ±0.8% | Benchmark standard for commercial workflows |
| Elevated / High | 100.00 – 500.00 | ±0.4% | Recommended for high-throughput modeling |
| Extreme Maximum | > 500.00 | ±0.1% | Verify input constraints for boundary saturation |

When adding P(A) + P(B) + P(C), overlapping regions shared by two events are counted twice, requiring subtraction. However, subtracting all three pairwise overlaps removes the central region shared by all three events three times, leaving it uncounted. Thus, P(A∩B∩C) must be added back once to achieve an exact count.
If events are mutually exclusive (disjoint), no two events can occur simultaneously (all intersections are 0). The formula simplifies directly to P(A ∪ B ∪ C) = P(A) + P(B) + P(C).
The probability of exactly one event is given by: P(Exactly One) = P(Only A) + P(Only B) + P(Only C) = [P(A) - P(AB) - P(AC) + P(ABC)] + [P(B) - P(AB) - P(BC) + P(ABC)] + [P(C) - P(AC) - P(BC) + P(ABC)].
