Subtract the normative mean and divide by the population standard deviation.
Map the Z-score linearly onto other standardized academic and psychometric scales.
Evaluate the standard normal CDF at Z = +1.0.
A raw score of 115 places the test-taker exactly 1 standard deviation above average, outperforming 84.13% of the normative population.
| Input Scale | Standard Output Range | Variance Band | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Baseline | 0.00 – 25.00 | ±1.5% | Optimal for conservative estimations |
| Median / Standard | 25.00 – 100.00 | ±0.8% | Benchmark standard for commercial workflows |
| Elevated / High | 100.00 – 500.00 | ±0.4% | Recommended for high-throughput modeling |
| Extreme Maximum | > 500.00 | ±0.1% | Verify input constraints for boundary saturation |

A raw score is the literal count of correct answers or points earned on an exam. A scaled or standardized score (like a Z-score or SAT score) transforms raw scores using normative population data so that test difficulty variations between test dates do not disadvantage students.
A Stanine ('Standard Nine') divides the normal distribution into 9 bands with a mean of 5 and standard deviation of 2. Scores 1-3 indicate below average performance, 4-6 represent the average range (54% of test takers), and 7-9 denote superior achievement.
To find what raw score is needed to reach a target percentile rank, find the corresponding Z-score from normal tables (e.g. Z = +1.96 for the 97.5th percentile) and evaluate X = μ + Z·σ.
