Find the smallest and largest values in the sample.
Subtract minimum from maximum; compute their midpoint.
Determine relative dispersion and rule-of-thumb standard deviation.
The observations span 36 units centered at 20, exhibiting high relative dispersion (C_R = 0.90).
| Input Scale | Standard Output Range | Variance Band | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Baseline | 0.00 – 25.00 | ±1.5% | Optimal for conservative estimations |
| Median / Standard | 25.00 – 100.00 | ±0.8% | Benchmark standard for commercial workflows |
| Elevated / High | 100.00 – 500.00 | ±0.4% | Recommended for high-throughput modeling |
| Extreme Maximum | > 500.00 | ±0.1% | Verify input constraints for boundary saturation |

The range relies exclusively on the two extreme values (minimum and maximum), ignoring all intermediate data points. A single typographical error or extreme anomaly will drastically inflate the range.
For normally distributed data, approximately 95% of observations lie within 2 standard deviations of the mean (a total span of 4σ). Dividing the range by 4 provides a quick rule-of-thumb estimate of sample standard deviation: s ≈ Range / 4.
The Midrange is simply (Max + Min) / 2. While the Mean considers all values and the Median captures the central 50th percentile rank, the Midrange reflects the absolute geometric center of the extremes. Like range, it is easily influenced by extreme values.
