RR = \frac{I_e}{I_u} = \frac{a / (a + b)}{c / (c + d)}, \quad \text{ARR} = I_e - I_u, \quad \text{NNT} = \frac{1}{|\text{ARR}|}a, bc, dI_eI_uRRNNT“In a clinical trial, 15 out of 500 vaccinated participants contract a seasonal flu versus 60 out of 500 in the placebo control group.”
Calculate the baseline event rates in the treated and control cohorts.
Compute the risk ratio and absolute risk difference.
Vaccinating 12 individuals prevents 1 symptomatic flu case.
A relative risk of 0.25 represents a 75% relative risk reduction (protective vaccine efficacy) with an NNT of 12.
| Input Scale | Standard Output Range | Variance Band | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Baseline | 0.00 – 25.00 | ±1.5% | Optimal for conservative estimations |
| Median / Standard | 25.00 – 100.00 | ±0.8% | Benchmark standard for commercial workflows |
| Elevated / High | 100.00 – 500.00 | ±0.4% | Recommended for high-throughput modeling |
| Extreme Maximum | > 500.00 | ±0.1% | Verify input constraints for boundary saturation |

An RR of 1.0 indicates identical risk in both groups. An RR > 1.0 indicates increased risk in the exposed group (e.g. RR = 2.0 means double the risk). An RR < 1.0 indicates a protective effect (e.g. RR = 0.25 means a 75% risk reduction).
Relative Risk is the ratio of probabilities (risk in exposed divided by risk in unexposed) and requires cohort or randomized controlled trials. Odds Ratio is the ratio of odds (odds in exposed divided by odds in unexposed) and is applicable to case-control studies.
NNT is the inverse of the Absolute Risk Reduction (1 / ARR). It represents the average number of patients who need to receive a treatment for one additional patient to benefit compared to control.
